History of the grape variety
Traminer and Gewürztraminer are two closely related grape varieties, but they differ significantly in terms of aroma and flavor. Traminer: Also known as Savagnin rose, Traminer is an ancient grape variety native to the Tyrol region of Italy. It produces wines that are generally lighter and less aromatic than Gewürztraminer. Traminer wines often have notes of citrus fruit, green apple and minerals, with more pronounced acidity. Gewürztraminer : Gewürztraminer is actually a mutation of Traminer, which is mainly found in Alsace. The word “Gewürz” means “spicy” in German, a reference to the aromatic intensity of this grape variety. Gewürztraminer wines are known for their powerful aromas of lychee, rose, exotic fruit and spices. They are generally fuller-bodied and less acidic than Traminer wines. It is important to note that the style and aromatic profile of these wines can vary depending on the terroir and climate of the region where they are grown. In Alsace, for example, Gewürztraminer is often made into a rich, almost sweet wine, while in Italy it can be drier and more subtle.
