Description
Softness in red
Merlot is a grape variety that produces a wine with aromas of red fruit and smoke. It is accentuated by the sandy soils of our estate, giving it a soft, rounded character. Merlot is a wine with a dark ruby colour and an expressive, pure nose, with notes of prune and a toasty, smoky character brought on by the barrel. The palate is consistent and straightforward. The fruit is present from the outset, with a slightly acidic character (blackberry and blackcurrant).

History of the grape variety
Merlot is also native to the Bordeaux region of France, where it is often used in blends with Cabernet Sauvignon. The name ‘Merlot’ comes from the French word for ‘merle’, a black bird that is attracted to the ripe grapes of this variety. Merlot is prized for its ability to produce sweet, fruity red wines that can be enjoyed young, but also have good ageing potential. It is now widely grown in many wine-growing regions around the world, including California, Ticino and Vully.
